Rupert Murdoch's Dow Jones and New York Post sue AI firm for 'illegal copying'
"This suit is brought by news publishers who seek redress for Perplexity's brazen scheme to compete for readers while simultaneously freeriding on the valuable content the publishers produce," according to the lawsuit filed in the southern district of New York by the Wall Street Journal parent Dow Jones and the New York Post. Perplexity did not immediately respond to emails from Reuters seeking comment. The AI company is among the leading startups attempting to uproot the search engine market dominated by Alphabet's Google. It assembles information from webpages it deems to be authoritative, then provides a summary directly within Perplexity's own tool. Perplexity uses a variety of large language models (LLMs) to generate its summaries, from OpenAI to Meta's open-source model Llama.

Dow Jones is Reimagining the News as a Knowledge Graph with Stardog
Stardog really means it when they say you can act as if the walls of the silos are not there. Debuting in version 7 is what they call Virtual Transparency, which appropriately abstracts away from the user, whether that's an application developer, a business analyst, data scientist, or anyone else who needs data, the unnecessary details of where the data is or how it's stored. Data consumers simple write a logical query, i.e. "get all purchases made in the last 30 days in the mid-atlantic, within the Electronics department for more than $100" and Stardog's platform handles the details of accessing the data where it resides and returning a single, coherent, and most important, complete result.

Strata Data Keynotes Day 2 on Dimming the Noise, Faster Data, and Becoming Boring
It began with a series of thought provoking topics; eliminating noise; driving faster data; successful data science by becoming boring. Eliminating Noise and AI for Compliance Amber Case of the MIT Media Lab talked about the noise, and the abundance of alerts that surround all of us. In our hotels.... High frequency content can boost salt and sweet flavors on airplanes (which is good) and on road trips (which gets you to eat more snacks). Her principles for sound design in products include: (i) Use better hardware that have better frequency ranges, (ii) Embed more information into sound (iii) Remove mechanical noises (example: Blendtec blenders) (iv) a lower level sound conveying information like Star Wars' R2D2 (v) allow us to convert sound to other modalities when required. Dinesh Nirmal of IBM starts with the question, "What is this guy smoking"?
